I sent etherium to my MetaMask wallet however eventually discovered they are in the form of etherium peg token. I have tried to swap and send them back to binance but to no avail. Have I lost them altogether or can someone explain why this happened and how to rectify it.

I think it happened the same to me. U just need to get some BNB to your metamask so you can pay the gas for the transaction to binance again. Check this https://community.metamask.io/t/retrieve-eth-peg-from-bsc-network/1393/1
