MetaMask extension cannot start suddenly. When opening the extension, it shows:
“MetaMask encountered a problem while starting.
Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘addListener’)”
I checked the Service Worker console and found the following errors:
Error setting side panel toolbar behavior:
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘addListener’)
service-worker.js:14082
Uncaught (in promise) TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading ‘addListener’)
Environment:
MetaMask Extension Version: 13.40.0
Browser: Google Chrome Dev 152.0.7967.2 (64-bit)
OS: Windows 10 Version 22H2
Extension ID: nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn
I have important wallet data in this extension and I have not uninstalled the extension, cleared browser data, or reset the wallet.
Please help confirm whether this is a known compatibility issue between MetaMask 13.40.0 and Chrome Dev, and advise a solution that keeps my existing wallet data.
Hello, I think this issue could be caused by your Chrome Dev browser version. I just tested it myself and I didn’t encounter any problems. You can try disabling the MetaMask wallet from the Chrome Extensions section and then enable it again to test. Also, please make sure that both your browser and MetaMask extension are updated to the latest versions
Hi Oxsoltani, Thank you for your help. I am considering installing Chrome Stable instead of Chrome Dev to check whether this issue is caused by the browser version. However, my current MetaMask wallet data is stored in this Chrome Dev profile, and I don’t have the recovery phrase available at the moment. Could you please advise the safest way to install Chrome Stable while keeping my existing MetaMask wallet data? Specifically: 1. Should I install Chrome Stable without uninstalling Chrome Dev? 2. Will my current Chrome profile and MetaMask extension data remain safe? 3. Is there any recommended backup procedure before switching browsers? I want to make sure my wallet data is not lost or damaged before making any changes. Thank you.
I suggest that you do not remove or change Chrome Dev or your current profile for now, because your MetaMask data is stored there and you don’t have your Recovery Phrase available yet How to export a private key in MetaMask Extension and Mobile | MetaMask Help Center First, try to recover and securely write down your Secret Recovery Phrase from MetaMask as soon as possible. You can use this link for guidance. You can also install Chrome Stable, but this will not automatically transfer your wallet to Chrome Stable. You will need your Recovery Phrase to restore access to your wallet on another browser .
The Chrome version you are using is the Developer version. Please try downloading the official Chrome Stable version instead. Also, try closing the browser completely and opening it again. If you still experience the issue after that, please contact support and open a ticket so they can investigate it further
Hi @blockchaintest If you don’t have a seed phrase, try this guide to finding it: How to recover your Secret Recovery Phrase | MetaMask Help Center (read Manual extraction method) If you have any problems, let me know — this is my favorite topic I’ve got some work to do in the garden right now, but I’ll definitely reply to you.
