Account recovery

I changed my smartphone and restored MetaMask using my seed phrase.

  • My main account (which I have) is displayed in MetaMask.
  • The second account (with ETH on the Ethereum network) is displayed in MetaMask.
  • The third account (with ETH on the Ethereum network) is displayed in MetaMask (although it had a small amount of ETH but now shows 0).
  • The fourth account (with no ETH on the Ethereum network, and I don’t know the address, private key, or JSON file) is not displayed in MetaMask. Before restoration, there was a message next to the fourth account saying “Imported”.
I want to restore the fourth account. Is there any way to do it?
By the way, I know the email address of the account I want to recover.

Hi @user1679,
to clarify first there’s no email association with MetaMask wallets or individual accounts.
If the account said “Imported” next to it, then it means that specific account was imported either using a private key or a JSON file. To get that account again the wallet you’ll need to re-import it, this article shows you how to do so How to import an account | MetaMask Help Center 🦊♥️, you will need the private key/ JSON file again in order to do so. Never share them with anyone.

I don’t know the private key; in this case, how should I proceed?

Hey there, if you don’t know your private key you can try some of these methods below

Here’s what you can try to regain access:

  1. Check for Backups: Look for any backups or files where you might have saved the private key or JSON file when the account was first imported. If you used cloud storage, an external drive, or another location, it’s worth checking there.
  2. Search Old Device Backups: If you have a backup of your previous device, check any directories (such as “Downloads” or “Documents”) where you might find JSON files or the private key you used to import the account.

If none of the above methods work, you can also check out this lengthy document provided by MetaMask Can I access my accounts without my secret Recovery Phrase?

Without access to the private key or JSON file, MetaMask is limited in recovery options due to the security-focused nature of MetaMask and blockchain technology.

I have my secret recovery phrase and have successfully restored my wallet. However, I’m unable to restore a specific account within that wallet because I don’t know its private key. I know the address of the account I want to restore. Is there anything I can do with just the address?

Sadly knowing the address will not help with recovery. Knowing the private key is a MUST to recover any account.

If I don’t have the private key, is there no way to restore the account?

If you don’t have access to your private key/recovery phrase then there’s unfortunately no way to restore your MetaMask account. The private key/ recovery phrase is essential for account recovery, and without it, you can’t regain access to the wallet or its contents.

Unfortunately, beyond this, the MetaMask support team is unable to assist with recovering a lost recovery phrase.
