I have a wallet from 2011 that I would like to access. This was before BIP39 which created the 12 word wallet recovery phrase. This makes it difficult if not impossible to add it to other exchanges like Coinbase.
Can MetaMask work with this wallet and access its contents for trading/selling?
Hi @mhixson thank you for contacting us, for your own safety you should never share your private key, seed phrase, or any passphrase/code you use to access your wallet.
MetaMask primarily supports the Ethereum blockchain and Ethereum-compatible networks. It uses the BIP39 standard for generating mnemonic phrases for wallet recovery. If your wallet from 2011 holds Bitcoin or is based on a system not compatible with Ethereum’s standards, directly importing it into MetaMask for trading/selling on platforms like Coinbase will not be straightforward or, in many cases, possible due to the different blockchain technologies involved.
What you could do, If you can access the original wallet software, look for an option to export your private keys or the wallet.dat file to import it into a compatible wallet, in this case, as I mentioned above, MetaMask uses BIP39 so it’s not possible here, but you could look for more options.
Please remember that WE WILL NEVER SEND YOU DM TO OFFER SUPPORT REGARDING MetaMask, SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL
